An Academic Essay needs a lot of research and it contains a lot of information.  It is indeed impossible for you to gather such huge information without the help or reference of someone else. This is where you need to cite in an academic essay. Citing your essay will not only help you, but also help your readers to get better information about your topic and your research. It makes your arguments more supportive and you can show evidence to readers for every single argument you put in your essay. Also, the reader gets an impression that you have really done a great research before writing the essay.

Citing or referencing is not as simple as it seems. There are a few different ways to cite an academic essay. There are a lot of reasons why we need to cite an essay. It gives the original author credits for his/her hard work. The most important thing is, you can give evidence for your arguments and your readers can read the original source if they want to. Also, it keeps you away from plagiarism. Not to forget, plagiarism is a serious offence in academic sector. While citing your academic essay, you need to be organized. Keep notes of every tools you have used for your research, be it books, websites, notes or journals. While you are putting something directly from a book or someone’s journal, always remember to cite the author’s name. Put the last name of the author followed by the initial. Cite the name of the book or journal and its date of publication. Do not forget to give a title for your piece of information and keep the page number noted. If you have done your research through some particular websites then always make sure to cite the names of the websites in your essay. These simple citing habits will keep you away from a lot of troubles.

Direct quotations you make on your essays should not be tempered at all. For example if you are quoting something directly, make sure you put the whole sentence inside a quotation mark. For example, Newton said, “I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.”  Here in this sentence, I have provided Newton’s name as well as have put the whole sentence inside a quotation mark.  If you are quoting something from a book, cite the name of the book in a bracket along with the page number.

Citing your academic essay is quite important. It will not only keep you away from plagiarism but also will help your readers get the best possible information about your topic. Citing makes your arguments more valid and more reliable. Therefore always cite your academic essays in the best possible way. Follow the points given above and you are good to go!
